On Saturday, residents can spring-clean their medicine cabinets, then stop by the police station to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted, and expired medicine. Unused medications in homes can be stolen, misused and abused, police said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2011, some 22,134 Americans died from overdoses of prescription medications. The majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, according to that agency.
