Stop by the East Brunswick Public Library on Thursday, June 26, and again on Saturday, July 3 for two events that will share the history, art and culture of Egypt.
Who is Egypt? Modern Egyptian Identity with Maysa Hayward, PhD, will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 26 and includes a discussion on how to define today's Egypt and Egyptians. Are the people Middle Eastern? African? Asian? Mediterranean? Is it an Arab state? A theocracy? A republic? A stratocracy? How does this definition affect Egypt's global relationships?
Born and raised in Egypt, Dr. Hayward is Dean of eLearning and Global Outreach at Ocean County College, where she developed a pilot program in Middle Eastern Studies. She has been an active teacher, researcher, presenter and grant writer in the area of international education, with an emphasis on Arabic literature, culture and history. This event is sponsored by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
Come back on Saturday, July 3, at 7 p.m. for Dance Like an Egyptian with Tanoura Dance and More, with Yasser Darwish. Born in Egypt, Darwish is the only master of authentic tanoura dance (Egyptian whirling dervish) in the U.S. He and a dancer from his dance troupe will dazzle and entertain with performances and cultural insights on tanoura and other Egyptian folk dances. This is a don’t-miss event for all ages! This event is sponsored by The Middlesex County Cultural & Heritage Commission, The East Brunswick Arts Commission and the East Brunswick Human Relations Council.
