East Brunswick Schools To Reschedule Canceled Athletic Practice

The Superintendent said they have begun working on rescheduling "some sports practices" on the Churchill Junior High School site.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — After school schedules were disrupted due to the bus driver shortage, the East Brunswick school district said it was working on rescheduling canceled athletic practices.

Athletic practice for Churchill Junior High School was canceled Tuesday after the district was unable to transport student-athlete to the high school.

In a message to the community, Superintendent Victor Valeski said officials have already begun working on rescheduling “some sports practices on the CJHS site.”

Officials also continue to secure quotes for buses for uncovered routes. “We are making progress but expect that we will not have everything resolved this week. Of course, I’ll report better news if I have it this week,” Valeski said.

The superintendent said bus safety issues remain the district's highest priority. Many parents and guardians reported students being dropped off at the wrong stop or the bus being delayed by over 40 minutes.

“Be assured, once we have your concern, it already is a priority for my team,” Valeski said. “We will communicate with you timely when we are aware that any bus may run later than scheduled.”

The bus driver shortage is a national issue affecting many states across the country.

Although several school districts have increased pay and benefits for drivers, they face stiff competition from delivery companies like Amazon.
