Police want to know why an incendiary device – a Molotov cocktail – was thrown into a car in the driveway of a family's New Jersey home.

The Calco family reported that it happened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday when Anthony Calco Jr. says he was still awake and watching TV, according to News12.

“I literally heard like a popping noise too. I literally go downstairs, open the front door and there’s smoke and there’s a huge fire outside,” he told News12.

The asphalt was singed and the garage door siding melted by the heat, according to ABC7.

"I truly think it's random," another family member, Nick Calco, told ABC7. "I don't think anyone had anything against us to do this."

Police spent hours on the scene searching for clues; the fire was loud enough to get the family out of bed, according to NBC4

Police have video showing the Molotov cocktail being thrown at the car but haven't released a description of the suspect, according to ABC7
