Welcome Event Planned For Sam Mattis In East Brunswick On Tuesday

Mattis will receive an Emergency Services Escort to the EBHS stadium at 6 p.m. The public is invited to cheer for the athlete.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Olympian Sam Mattis is all set to receive a warm welcome home from the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday evening.

The East Brunswick Recreation Department has planned a public welcome event for Mattis at the East Brunswick High School stadium.

Mattis will receive an Emergency Services Escort to the stadium at 6 p.m. The public is invited to reach the stadium at 5:30 p.m. to cheer for the athlete as he enters the facility. Following a short speech, he will join the Youth Track and Field program with their practice.

The East Brunswick resident made the Olympics for the first time when he took third place in Men's U.S. Track & Field Olympic discus trials held in June. Mattis qualified for the finals in the discus by throwing a season-best 63.74 meters during last Thursday's qualifying round in Tokyo.

He is now placed 8th in the world following Saturday's final.

Mattis, 27, is a graduate of East Brunswick High School. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he was the 2015 NCAA national champion in the discus.
