Lady Bears Fall to South Brunswick in Semi-Finals (VIDEO)

The East Brunswick Girls Varsity Soccer Team gave up it's dream of winning the GMC for the ninth straight time after losing 2-1 Thursday.

After leading for much of the game, East Brunswick gave up two goals in 30 seconds to South Brunswick in the semi-final round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament.

The Bears took the lead in the first half when Cristina Estremera scored. In the second half, South Brunswick tied it when defender Cagnie Antzcak hit a high bouncing pass that went over the head of the East Brunswick Defender. Thirty seconds later Casey Armstrong scored to put the Vikings up 2-1.

Head Coach Kevin Brady said his squad played well, and that he is proud of them, despite the tough loss.

"I feel badly for my group of seniors who dedicated themselves for so many years to the sport and our program.  This was a tough way to lose, but I am proud of them for everything they have done for me and for their school.

"I thought we played some of our best soccer of the season in the first half.  We passed the ball crisply, and generated several good chances.  Looking back, we probably needed to take advantage and score a second or third goal.  As the wind and rain intensified in the second half, it became much more difficult for us to possess and advance the ball.

"Their goalkeeper (Vanessa Perdomo) was outstanding; she made three saves where the ball had seemingly beat her.  It was a tremendous performance by one of our area's top players."

South Brunswick will face Piscataway in the GMC finals on Saturday. East Brunswick had won the tournament eight years in a row before this year. Last year, the Bears defeated South Brunswick in overtime to capture the title.
