NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — An Atlantic County, New Jersey man admitted on Tuesday that he robbed the Chase bank branch in North Brunswick last February, as well as two other banks in the New Jersey/Pennsylvania area.

The Chase bank that was robbed is located on Rt. 130 near Georges Road in North Brunswick. It was robbed on February 28, 2017. North Brunswick was apparently the first in a string of bank robberies Matthew Burney confessed he committed last year.

On that date, Burney walked into the Rt. 130 bank, verbally threatened the tellers and was given approximately $4,960 in cash before he fled, federal prosecutors said.

Burney, 44, of Brigantine, also admitted to robbing a PNC Bank branch in Marlton on Dec. 8, 2017 and a Bank of America in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania a day later, on December 9, 2017. In those two incidents, he showed what looked to be a semi-automatic handgun to the bank tellers, and threatened to shoot the occupants inside the bank if the alarm was activated, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

But he did not show a gun in the North Brunswick incident.
