EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — East Brunswick police saved the life of a man who was choking on food by performing the Heimlich maneuver earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Oct. 3, a 911 call was made from a house on Merrill Avenue in the Township. The 911 operator was informed that a man was choking and turning blue. Detective Paul Jun and Detective Dan Unkel were in the area and responded within seconds. When they got to the home, they found the 69-year-old man sitting in a kitchen chair with his wife present. He was unresponsive and his face was completely blue, the officers said.

The detectives took turns performing the Heimlich maneuver and eventually dislodged food that was stuck in his throat. The victim began to breathe on his own and was further treated by Atlantic 11 Rescue Squad.
