Updated: "Very serious leg injuries" after 80,000-pound steel beam falls on him, Sayreville police tell Patch.

Sayreville, NJ - A Laurence Harbor man suffered very serious, but non life-threatening injuries Monday in Sayreville when an 80,000-pound I-beam fell on his leg, crushing it, Sayreville police confirmed to Patch.
The accident happened at 12:25 p.m. at Matty’s On-Site LLC, located on 1945 Rt. 35 South, said Lt. Dan Plumacker with the Sayreville Police Department.
An I-beam weighing approximately 80,000 pounds was being moved with a forklift when it dropped, pinning the leg of a 33-year-old employee under it, Plumacker said. One of the man’s leg suffered “very serious” injuries, he said, but they did not appear to be life threatening.

Matty’s On-Site LLC is located just down the street from Eisenhower Elementary School, so an ambulance rushed the victim to a large open field near the school’s playground, where he was picked up by the New Jersey State Police’s NorthStar helicopter. He was rushed to the Trauma Center at RWJUH New Brunswick. Sayreville detectives and OSHA will be handling the investigation.
Police are not releasing the man’s name until all his family is notified, Plumacker said.
