Man Sold East Brunswick Medical Records, Police Say

More than 1,000 patient medical records from 3 doctors in East Brunswick and Somerset may have been compromised, police said.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A Sayreville man was arrested Tuesday and charged with selling medical records that he stole from a storage unit in East Brunswick. More than 1,000 patient medical records from doctors in East Brunswick and Somerset may have been compromised, police said.

Fernando Rios, 33, of Sayreville, broke into a storage facility in East Brunswick, which housed the records of a medical practice of three doctors from East Brunswick and Somerset, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor, which is leading the investigation. Over 1,000 medical records that contained personal information of patients were stolen and then sold.

Rios was arrested Thursday on one count of identity theft in the second degree, one count of trafficking in personally identifying information in the second degree and one count of burglary in the third degree. Homeland Security officers and the East Brunswick police also helped make the arrest.
