Police Save Choking Man's Life in South River

Officers Paul Muszynski and Bernard Mackiel responded to a South River home Saturday on a call about an adult man choking.

South River, NJ - Two South River police officers saved a local resident who was choking this week, said Police Chief Mark Tinitigan.

At 6:08 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, Officers Paul Muszynski and Bernard Mackiel responded to a South River home on a call about an adult man choking. The man was still choking when the officers arrived.

Muszynski immediately positioned himself behind the choking man, whose body became motionless and started to drop to the ground. The two officers administered series of abdominal thrusts, which ultimately dislodging an obstruction in the man's throat.

The patient regained his ability to breathe and became responsive once again.

All members of the South River police department were recently recertified in CPR training, which included how to aid choking victims.

Chief Tinitigan praised the two officers for their quick thinking and response.

“This is the reason we train and re-certify our officers to provide proper aid," Tinitigan said.
