Report: Iconic East Brunswick Yates Water Tower to be Razed

Rather than endure an expensive process that might only preserve the tower for  a brief period of time, an iconic East Brunswick water tower will be razed, the East Brunswick Sentinel reports.

Preservation of the 104-foot Yates tower would require sandblasting on the inside and outside of the tower and leave lead particles all over the structure, East Brunswick Chief Financial Officer Lou Neely told the Sentinel. He added the process would be “very expensive,” and may only preserve the tower for 20 years.

The tower, located between Route 18 and Old Bridge Turnpike, was constructed in 1955. It is the tallest structure in the township, according to the report.

Middlesex County officials also use the tower to house radio equipment, according to the report.

The bid for the deconstruction project is set to be awarded at tonight’s council meeting.
