Rt. 18 Gas Line Work In East Brunswick Will Cause Natural Gas Odor
All lanes remain open; the smell is expected and not an emergency, NJDOT says
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Drivers, businesses and residents near Route 18 in East Brunswick should expect a strong natural gas odor Tuesday and Wednesday as crews purge a gas line in the highway median.
Work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days in the median between the New Jersey Turnpike and Cranbury Road. The odor is a byproduct of the purging process and is not an emergency. All northbound and southbound lanes on Route 18 are expected to remain open, though motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays through the work zone.
The gas main work is part of the $86.1 million federally funded Route 18 Drainage and Pavement Rehabilitation project, which covers approximately four and a half miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick. The broader project includes milling and paving, drainage system and stormwater basin improvements, utility relocation, new sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, guiderail upgrades and intersection improvements. Completion is expected in late 2027.
