EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – Sen. Cory Booker has nominated the East Brunswick Public Library for the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, Council Kevin McEvoy said during Monday’s Council meeting.

The National Medal for Museum and Library Services is the nation’s highest honor awarded to libraries and museums for service to their communities.

During the Council meeting, the Township issued a proclamation supporting the library’s nomination for the award.

The nomination was a “big deal” not only for the library but the township itself, Mayor Brad Cohen said. He thanked the library for their efforts and for putting East Brunswick on the map.

“It’s been decades since it’s ever been awarded in New Jersey, so this is a big, big deal to be nominated for that,” Cohen said.

“When you think about a town like ours, which has for decades revolved around the commitment to the arts, education system and library, it’s fitting that this year, the Senator chose to nominate East Brunswick.”

The nomination comes close on the heels of the library’s expansion where it provides iPads loaded with health information, Cohen said.

“It’s a great, great honor. I certainly hope we do win that,” the mayor said.

An employee, board member, volunteer, member of the public, or a government official can nominate an institution for the National Medal for Museum and Library Services. Nomination is open through Nov. 1.
