Get Proactive with Osteoporosis, says Jersey Physical Therapy
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – According to Sean Moore, physical therapist and partner with Jersey Physical Therapy, he and his colleagues often see and treat osteoporosis patients only after they’ve suffered an injury – a fall, for instance, or a broken bone. This doesn’t have to be the case, however.
“It’s been proven that strength training and weight-bearing/impact exercises can be a beneficial component to slowing or preventing the loss of bone density, or osteoporosis,” Moore said. “That’s why we at Jersey Physical Therapy want to encourage people to be proactive about this disease.”
As part of this outreach process, Jersey PT will host a free workshop at the East Brunswick Senior Center on Friday, June 20 titled “The Link Between Osteoporosis, Strength Training and Balance.” The 12:30 p.m. workshop is part of Jersey Physical Therapy’s “On the Move” Lifestyle Enhancement Series.
“We’ll share more general knowledge of what osteoporosis actually is and will discuss both nutrition and exercise,” Moore said. “In terms of the exercise component, we’ll work to develop an understanding of the different types of exercises that can prevent or slow the onset of osteoporosis, targeting the ones that are most beneficial and which people can do on a day-to-day basis at home.”
Jersey Physical Therapy’s “On the Move” Lifestyle Enhancement Series started in February as a continuation of free workshops held in Jersey PT clinics in 2013. With the series consists of free lifestyle- and/or athletic-based workshops held in community locations near one of Jersey Physical Therapy’s three locations.
“I’ve definitely gotten some positive feedback after presenting at one of our workshops,” Moore said. “This will be the fourth one I’ve participated in. Despite the topic we’re addressing on any particular month, our ultimate goal in this series is to provide people with information they can use to better themselves. It’s a simple concept, but a powerful one.”
