An unattended piece of luggage was found at Sayreville Plaza on Rt. 9 Dec. 23 and a bomb-sniffing dog had to be brought in.

SAYREVILLE, NJ — This explains the traffic jam on Rt. 9 south in Sayreville on the Saturday before Christmas: An unattended piece of luggage was found in a parking lot that day, and a bomb-sniffing dog had to be brought in to make sure the luggage was safe, Sayreville police said.

The unattended luggage was found Saturday, Dec. 23 in the parking lot of Sayreville Plaza on Rt. 9 South, Captain Daniel Plumacker of the Sayreville police told Patch. Police evacuated the area and called in an explosive-detection dog from the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Department.

"The dog did not detect any explosives in the suitcase and it was then safe to open," said Capt. Plumacker. "It turns out that it was empty."
