Upcoming Program on Environmental Impact of Electrical Vehicles

Electric vehicles can have a positive impact on the environment, but thir increased usage creates a critical challenge: what do we do with their batteries? Ahmad Pesaran, Ph.D., Chief Engineer Emeritus; National Laboratory of the Rockies, explores this topic during the East Brunswick Public Library’s online program "Electric Vehicle Lithium-Ion Battery Life Cycle Management" on Wednesday, October 7 at 7:00 pm.

Pesaran is an internationally recognized leader in energy storage and efficiency research, with over 40 years at the National Laboratories of Rockies. He pioneered battery thermal management, safety and second-use applications. He has been trusted advisor to DOE, DOD, NHTSA, and industry consortia, actively shaping the future of batteries and electrified mobility.

With tight supply chains and high environmental impacts surrounding the minerals that power them, maximizing battery utility through second-life reuse and closed-loop recycling is essential. Second-use applications—like repurposing retired batteries for energy storage—extend the life of these vital resources while regional recycling infrastructure develops.

Pesaran’s presentation highlights global legislation, new recycling procedures and engineering milestones that manage disposal costs, secure raw material supply chains for the future, and have a better impact on the environment.
