MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Drivers on I-280 between East Hanover and Roseland are expected to see overnight lane closures on Friday as crews shift traffic on the eastbound Bridge over the Passaic River.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the closures are scheduled from 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, and continue work that began last weekend.

NJDOT reported that a single lane on I-280 eastbound is scheduled to be closed before the bridge during that time, with one lane maintained overnight. The agency added that a single lane also may be closed on I-280 westbound on Friday night to assist with the traffic shift. The closure is needed to place a barrier, restripe the roadway, and implement a traffic shift on I-280 eastbound, officials said.

By 6 a.m. Saturday, NJDOT said two lanes of traffic will be restored in both directions. Under the new configuration, the left lane on I-280 eastbound will be shifted onto a temporary median crossover roadway, while the right lane will be shifted onto the right shoulder. Drivers on I-280 eastbound who want Exit 4A/B will be directed to stay right because the exit cannot be accessed from the left lane.

According to NJDOT, the traffic pattern is needed for bridge demolition and reconstruction and is expected to remain in place for about six months. I-280 westbound traffic will remain in its current configuration.

The work is part of a $12 million federally funded project to replace the I-280 eastbound bridge deck on the Passaic River crossing between East Hanover in Morris County and Roseland in Essex County.

NJDOT said the project also includes abutment improvements, guiderail replacement, installation of a wildlife fence, and scour protection improvements to the piers under the bridge.

The project was designed to advance in stages to minimize impact on motorists, according to NJDOT. Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2029.

NJDOT advised motorists to slow down, use caution, and expect delays. The agency also said the precise timing of the work could change because of weather or other factors. Drivers can check 511nj.org for real-time travel information.
