Princeton, East Windsor Area: First A Road Salt shortage, Now An Asphalt Crisis

When road crews aren’t plowing or salting snow-covered or icy roads, they’re trying to patch the craters that have opened up from brief thaws followed by freezing. But the asphalt they need for the job has been trickier to find as potholes continue to open up just as quickly as others are closed, according toNJ.com.

“With this winter being the fifth highest in snowfall, needless to say with all this weather, there’s a lot of demand for cold patch,” David Sulkin, vice president of sales and marketing for American Asphalt Co., one of the leading suppliers of asphalt in New Jersey, told NJ.com.

Potholes have to be dry before a municipality can fill them or they will continue to open up, according to West Windsor Business Administrator Marlena Schmid. As of last week, both West Windsor and Plainsboro were testing new material to fill potholes, according to The Princeton Packet.

”The Public Works director reported a couple of days ago that the asphalt we had had to be returned,” Ms. Schmid told The Princeton Packet. “We had bad batches of an inferior product. Plainsboro was experiencing the same problem.”
