ICE Detains Man Facing Charges In Fatal East Windsor Hit-&-Run

The suspect, an East Windsor resident, faces charges including leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

EAST WINDSOR, NJ — An East Windsor man facing charges in a fatal hit-and-run crash on Route 33 was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Newark field office on Aug. 19, according to a statement from ICE.

ICE identified the man as Herman Johel Santos-Morales and said he is a Honduran national in the country illegally. He faces pending charges connected to an Aug. 9 crash that killed one pedestrian and critically injured another.

"On Aug. 19, ICE ERO Newark arrested Herman Johel Santos-Morales, an illegal alien from Honduras who faces pending charges for allegedly knowingly leaving the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash in East Windsor, N.J.," ICE said on X.

According to East Windsor Police, the crash happened around 10:59 p.m. on Aug. 9 at the intersection of Route 33 West and Probasco Road, when a 2013 Chrysler 300 traveling westbound struck two pedestrians crossing the road. The driver fled the scene, police said.

A 37-year-old East Windsor man died of his injuries at Princeton Medical Center, according to police. A 21-year-old Spotswood man sustained significant bodily injuries and was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition, police said.

Police identified the driver as Santos-Morales, of East Windsor, and said he was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, endangering an injured victim, causing death while driving with a suspended or revoked license, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, and causing serious bodily injury while driving with a suspended or revoked license.

He was turned over to the custody of the Mercer County Correctional Facility, police said at the time.

According to ICE's current statement, Santos-Morales is facing removal.
