What's in a Name?

What are the chances that your children's name top the baby name list during the same year? Blogger Cristina fills you in.

The moment I saw my daughter's tiny face, there was no doubt in my mind that she was Isabella Rose — our beautiful rose. Later that evening, soon after we signed her birth certificate, the nurse came in to see if I was ready to feed my daughter. "Oh Yes! Please bring our Isabella." The nurse, looked down at her paperwork and asked, "Which Isabella?  Three Isabellas were born within the last 24 hours."

Fast forward to present day. According to the 2010 census, the number one name is Isabella, both across the US and in  too! The 2010 census also indicates that the number one name for boys in NJ is Michael! Did I mention our son Michael was born 4 years ago?

In all honesty, I was perturbed seeing both their names on the top of the list. I chose Isabella because it translated into my family's native Italian so perfectly. I chose Michael to honor my father and father-in-law (his middle name is Thomas).

And then it dawned on me.

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose.

By any other name would smell as sweet."

My children are healthy and smart and kind. They laugh, they pick their noses and still think it's funny to fart loudly.  It's their personality and demeanor that bring their names to life, as will the other 748 Isabellas and the 703 Michaels who will define their names and personalities in the days and years to come.
