Did you know the average American uses about 500 plastic bags each year? In Mercer County alone, that comes out to be about 183 million bags per year. In New Jersey that adds up to about 4.4 billion bags per year. The plastic bag was invited in 1977, so in almost 40 years the plastic bag has polluted our landscapes, our rivers, streams, and Oceans. It also has had devastating impacts on our large marine animals like dolphins and sea turtles. But all is not lost!

This November 4th, Mercer County voters have the unique opportunity to become the first community in NJ to vote on this issue through a non-binding resolution that asks voters if they would support a five cent fee on all plastic bags.

Fees are the single most effective way of changing consumer habits. A Yes vote on this non-binding resolution will send a clear message to the Board of Chosen Freeholders that Mercer County citizens are ready to join California, Washington D.C., The European Union, Hawaii, Austin TX, and other forward thinking citizens of the world.
