Mercer County Man Arrested With Loaded Handgun, Drugs: Prosecutor

Dawan Smith was arrested and charged on Friday, Sept. 28.

A man was arrested and $2,760 in marijuana and a handgun were seized following a two-week investigation, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said on Thursday.

Dawan Smith, 27, of Ewing, is charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with the intent to distribute, possession with the intent to distribute within 500 feet of a park and possession of a weapon while committing a narcotics offense.

He was arrested without incident as he left his house at about 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28. In an ensuing search of his home, detectives said they found a loaded .45 caliber handgun, a half-pound of marijuana, 13 bags of marijuana packaged for distribution and $1,055 in cash. The seized marijuana has an approximate street value of $2,760, according to the prosecutor’s office. After he was charged, Smith was released pending further court proceedings.

The raid was executed by officers with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, the New Jersey State Police K-9 Unit, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Hamilton and Trenton police, under the command of the prosecutor’s Special Investigations Unit. The investigation was lead by the Mercer County Narcotics Task Force.
