Mercer Woman Charged After 24 Dogs Found Living In Unsanitary Conditions

MERCER COUNTY, NJ - An Ewing Township woman has been charged after police and animal control officers found 24 dogs living in unsanitary conditions inside her home, Ewing Police said Thursday.

Ewing Police patrol officers responded to a home on Terrace Boulevard on July 13 around 9:55 a.m. to assist Ewing Township Animal Control Officer Nyesha Foster on a reported animal complaint, police said.

Foster said animal control had received information following a recent medical emergency at the residence that there were multiple dogs, possibly more than 20, living in unsanitary conditions.

An investigation conducted by Ewing Police Officer Andrew Myers and Foster revealed a total of 24 dogs were living in conditions not suitable for habitation, according to police. Many of the dogs were also experiencing medical conditions that were not being properly cared for and lacked proper shelter.

The dogs were removed from the residence with the assistance of Ewing Animal Control and transported to EASEL Animal Rescue League in Ewing Township for temporary care, police said.

Shirley Henderson, of Ewing, the owner of the dogs, was charged with failure to provide adequate shelter and care for animals and was given a court date in Ewing Municipal Court. She was additionally charged with several local ordinance violations by Ewing Township Animal Control, according to police.

The dogs were provided veterinary care, and ownership was eventually surrendered to EASEL Animal Rescue League. Since the surrender, one of the dogs has had a litter of puppies. Those interested in adopting any of the dogs can contact EASEL at (609) 883-0540.
