LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — Gov. Phil Murphy will speak at Rider University as part of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider’s Governing New Jersey series on Tuesday, Sept. 24, the university announced.

"A Conversation with Gov. Phil Murphy" will feature a substantive Q&A session in the Mercer Room (inside Daly Dining Hall) beginning at 11:30 a.m.

"We are honored that Gov. Murphy has chosen to sit down with Rider students and discuss how state government impacts their life," Rebovich Institute Director Micah Rasmussen said. "I'm certain they will find him to be engaged and interested in hearing what they have to say."

Murphy was elected New Jersey’s 56th governor in November 2017. He has promised to make the state more fair and just and to grow the middle class. During this appearance, he’ll discuss his views on current events, his priorities and his reflections on what he believes will be facing the next generation of New Jersey’s leaders.

Before being elected governor, Murphy served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany for President Barack Obama from 2009 through 2013. He also served in several high-level roles in Goldman Sachs for over 23 years. He received degrees from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Murphy's appearance will continue the tradition of New Jersey governors who have visited Rider as part of the ongoing Governing New Jersey series produced by the Rebovich Institute.

The Rebovich Institute was founded by the late Professor David Rebovich in 2001. It is dedicated to public service and scholarly analysis of government, public policy, campaigns and elections in New Jersey. Several other events hosted by the Rebovich Institute will take place at Rider this fall.

David Wildenstein, the so-called “mastermind of Bridgegate,” will appear on Oct. 9 and discuss his outsized influence in covering politics in New Jersey for the past 20 years.

The trade war between the U.S. and China will take center stage during this year's Hennessy Family Lecture on Capitalism on Oct. 30. The lecture will feature Dr. Michael Pillsbury, the director of the Center for Chinese Strategy, Hudson Institute and the international best-selling author of “The Hundred-Year Marathon.”

On Nov. 13, mayors from the surrounding communities will gather at Rider to discuss water quality — the broad subject of this year's Shared Read, “The Poisoned City” by Anna Clark, which tells the story of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
