4 Edison Students Win 2022 College-Sponsored Merit Scholarships

The students will be awarded between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

EDISON, NJ — Four high school students from Edison have earned the prestigious college-sponsored merit scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Competition for 2022, the organization announced.

The students are:

  • Pratham B. Bhatt of Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences, Woodbridge, won the National Merit Boston University Scholarship. Bhatt plans to study neurosurgery next fall.
  • Victoria X. He, from J.P. Stevens High School, won the National Merit Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey Scholarship. He plans to study law.
  • Varun Karry, of J.P. Stevens High School, won the National Merit Emory University Scholarship. Karry plans to study medicine.
  • Lauren Sun, from J.P. Stevens High School, won the National Merit University of Southern California Scholarship. Sun plans to study applied mathematics in the fall.

The students are among more than 2,600 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Officials at each of the sponsored colleges selected their winners from among the finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

The selected students are awarded between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

High school juniors entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

An additional group of Scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in this year's competition to about 4,000.
