EDISON, NJ — The township recently introduced an ordinance that seeks to redefine electric vehicles and establish new charging levels for different types of vehicles.
Through the ordinance, the local government aims to ensure "conformity with State mandates regarding the installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations."
The ordinance goes on to define the different levels of electric vehicles based on their amp breaker and AC volt circuit.
It now defines an electric vehicle as "Any vehicle that is licensed and registered for operation on public and private highways, roads, and streets; and operates either partially or exclusively using an electric motor powered by an externally charged on-board battery."
Currently, charging stations and equipment are permitted in all zoning districts. Around 3 percent of all parking spaces must accommodate electric vehicles.
The new ordinance outlines that going forward, as a condition of preliminary site plan approvals, all applications must prepare as Make-Ready parking spaces at least 15 percent of the required off-street parking spaces, and install EVSE in at least one-third of the 15 percent of Make-Ready parking spaces.
A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for May 22.
