Once officers and firefighters arrived at the scene, they found multiple residents trapped and hanging from windows.

Responding forces then deployed truck and all available ground ladders, successfully rescuing about 10-12 people, officials said.

Among those rescued was a woman in a wheelchair, who was safely removed from a window and brought to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital for smoke inhalation.

She has since been released and is reported to be doing well, officials said.

According to a report from News 12 New Jersey, a pet cat and several goldfish also died as a result of the fire.

“Our first responders performed with extraordinary professionalism and heroism under pressure,” Mayor Sam Joshi said. “We are grateful to all of our crews who continuously work through the night.”

As a result of the fire, 20 apartments have been deemed uninhabitable, and displaced residents have been provided temporary living accommodations.

The American Red Cross has been activated and is working in coordination with the Edison Office of Emergency Management to assist all affected families.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is currently under investigation. It is not suspicious, officials said.

The fire on Marina Drive is one of 31 incident calls that Edison Township responded to from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, including downed trees on homes, wires, poles and more.
