EDISON, NJ — House of Bombay, the Indian restaurant that replaced the beloved Menlo Park Diner on Route 1, has temporarily closed following a fire, the restaurant announced on social media.
The diner was a Route 1 fixture that operated 24 hours a day for roughly three decades before it closed. House of Bombay opened in the space just weeks ago.
In a social media post, House of Bombay said it was closed "until further notice" after "an unexpected fire incident."
"The incident took place while the restaurant was closed and no guests or staff were present. The safety of our guests and team comes first," the restaurant management said.
The restaurant did not specify when the fire occurred, its cause, or a timeline for reopening.
"We're working through everything and will share an update as soon as we're ready to reopen," the restaurant said in the post.
In a separate post, House of Bombay said all reservations made through Resy from Sept. 5 onward have been canceled until operations resume. Customers will not be charged, and anyone who was charged can message the restaurant with a screenshot to request a refund.
The Menlo Park Diner first opened in 1960 and ran around the clock until the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a change in hours. It was listed for sale for $4 million in January 2023 and closed later that year following a kitchen fire in October 2023.
The building's interior was fully remodeled before House of Bombay's opening. The restaurant is located at 1475 Route 1 South in Edison.
