The U.S. Department of State award will take her abroad to learn how other countries approach AI and education.

Joan Valentine (Edison Township School District)

EDISON, NJ – An Edison Township School District administrator has been awarded a Fulbright Teacher Exchange for the 2026-27 academic year.

Joan Valentine, the district's chief academic officer of secondary education, is one of about 2,500 U.S. citizens who will teach, study and conduct research abroad through the Fulbright Program, according to a release dated Aug. 19. The awards are given by the U.S. Department of State.

Valentine said she is especially interested in how education systems around the world are approaching innovation and artificial intelligence.

"I am especially excited to explore how education systems around the world are approaching innovation, artificial intelligence, and preparing students for a rapidly changing future," Valentine said. "I look forward to bringing that learning back to Edison and using it to help shape meaningful opportunities for our students and educators."

Fulbright Teacher Exchanges offer training and exchange opportunities for K-12 teachers. The release says U.S. Fulbright teachers learn about new educational practices in technology, AI and critical minerals. Participants often keep working with their international colleagues after they return, and many go on to host visiting scholars.

The Fulbright Program was founded in 1946 to promote global peace and prosperity through educational and cultural exchange. It marks its 80th anniversary in 2026, the same year the country celebrates its 250th. Each year, more than 2,500 American teachers, artists and professionals, along with participants from 160 countries and locations, take part.
