METUCHEN, NJ — Metuchen has a new spot to satisfy its sweet tooth.

Emporium Sweets, an old-school candy store, has opened at 1 Lincoln Ave., across from L&L Pizza on Main Street. Mayor Jonathan M. Busch shared the news on Facebook.

"On the eve of Halloween, here's some sweet news for Metuchen," Busch wrote.

The shop sells "every kind of candy you can imagine," along with toys, candy-themed gifts, specialty chocolates and fudge, according to the mayor.

When entering the store, customers should look up. An electric Lionel Willy Wonka train runs on a track mounted to the ceiling.

Owner Harold Morin opened The Emporium vintage store four years ago, but candy has been part of his life since he was a kid. His father worked his entire career for Henry Heide, the company behind Jujyfruits, Jujubes and Red Hot Dollars.

"You could say he grew up in a candy family," Busch wrote.

Morin has a background in restaurant work and a love of entertaining, and had long wanted to serve something in the other part of his store, according to the mayor. The idea for a candy shop came together after Morin, who also works as a contractor, helped build a candy store in Lavallette.

The shop is already catching on with some young customers.

"A few Edgar students have already discovered this special little spot, and I have a feeling they'll be back with friends," Busch wrote.
