Edison Community Celebrates the Timeless Bond Between Guru and Student at 13th Annual Guru Vandana

In a time when education is rapidly evolving through technology, innovation, and digital learning, one timeless truth remains unchanged: the influence of a teacher extends far beyond the classroom. That spirit of gratitude, respect, and cultural reverence was beautifully reflected during the 13th Annual Guru Vandana Celebration, hosted by Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA (HSS USA) through its educational initiative Hindu Education Foundation (HEF) at Kiddie Keep Well Camp in Edison, New Jersey.

The annual event brought together students, parents, educators, civic representatives, and volunteers to honor the sacred bond between teacher and student—an idea deeply rooted in Hindu philosophy. In Sanskrit, Guru Vandana means “salutations to the teacher,” recognizing educators not only as instructors, but as mentors who shape wisdom, values, discipline, and character.

As expressed in the revered Sanskrit verse:

“गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।
गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः॥”

(The Guru is the embodiment of knowledge and wisdom. To that revered teacher, we offer our deepest salutations.)

The celebration began with Deep Prajwalan (ceremonial lamp lighting) led by Ralph Errico (Memeber Board of Education, Edison) and Keshav Dev ji, symbolizing the triumph of knowledge over darkness and ignorance. The ceremony was followed by sacred prayers, Vakratunda Mahakaya, Ganesh Vandana, and a presentation highlighting the significance of Guru Vandana and Hindu cultural values.

Students and youth then presented a vibrant lineup of cultural performances, including a Bandish dedicated to Guru, a dramatic skit titled The Keepers of the Light, traditional dance performances, games, and interactive cultural activities—each reflecting gratitude, discipline, and the timeless teacher-student relationship.

A major highlight of the event was the Teacher Felicitation Ceremony, where educators from across the Edison and Middlesex County area were honored through traditional expressions of respect and appreciation.

This year’s celebration recognized 15 distinguished educators, civic representatives, and cultural mentors from multiple institutions, reflecting the diversity of the local education community:

• Woodbrook Elementary School – 2 educators
• Woodrow Wilson Middle School – 2 educators
• Menlo Park Elementary School – 2 educators
• John Marshall Elementary School – 2 educators
• James Madison Elementary School – 1 educator
• Acharya Dance School LLC – 1 cultural educator
• Anubhuti School of Music – 1 music educator
• Edison Board of Education – 1 representative
• Middlesex County – 1 civic representative

One of the strongest messages of Guru Vandana comes from the ancient teaching:

“आचार्य देवो भवः”
(Honor the teacher as divine.)

In today’s world—where teachers often serve as mentors, counselors, role models, and guides—Guru Vandana continues to remind communities that education is not solely about academics, but also about nurturing ethics, compassion, humility, and leadership.

For more than 13 years, this celebration in Edison has strengthened the bond between families, schools, and cultural heritage. More than a ceremonial gathering, Guru Vandana reaffirmed a timeless Hindu value: when society honors its teachers, it honors the foundation of knowledge, wisdom, and future generations.
