Edison Residents Oppose Plan For New Lidl Grocery Store

Residents of Plainfield Avenue and Brunswick Avenue are opposing the plan citing traffic and safety concerns.

EDISON, NJ — Township residents are opposing another proposed development in town. German discount retail chain Lidl has applied for site plan approval in Edison. But residents of Plainfield Avenue and Brunswick Avenue are opposing the plan citing traffic and safety concerns.

Lidl plans to construct a 29,640 square feet grocery store at 3 Brunswick Avenue. Variances are being sought for loading spaces, parking spots, minimum sign areas among others. However, residents living in the neighborhood have expressed concern over the proposal as they believe a large grocery store could increase vehicular traffic, leading to accidents and air and noise pollution.

A Planning Board hearing of the application was scheduled for Monday evening at 7. Residents hoped to address the likelihood of pedestrian fatality, a surge in traffic congestion and commute times, and an overall decline in quality of life among other issues.
