Edison Sees 25% Drop in Route 1 Crashes, 50% Decline in Fatalities: Police

The police department's traffic enforcement strategy has delivered safety improvements on Edison's Route 1, the Police Chief said.

EDISON, NJ — Police Chief Thomas Bryan and the Edison Police Department are making significant progress in improving traffic safety along Route 1, with crash data showing measurable improvements.

In recent years, the department saw an increase in crashes and fatalities on Route 1. Embracing the state's Vision Zero Model—which holds that every person should be able to travel safely without risk of death or serious injury—Edison Police partnered with the New Jersey Department of Transportation to enhance pedestrian safety along the corridor. Improvements include upgraded lighting and higher-visibility crossings at key locations. The department also participates in enforcement details with the Middlesex County Traffic Task Force along Route 1.

The results have been substantial. Comparing 2024 and 2025 metrics shows a 25% decrease in crashes, a 50% decrease in fatalities, a 26% decrease in impaired driving crashes and a 14% decrease in crashes with injuries.
