Fire Damages Edison Apartment Complex, 80 Residents Displaced

About 24 units were damaged in the blaze, officials said. The Red Cross of New Jersey is providing families with emergency assistance.

EDISON, NJ - More than 80 residents were displaced after a fire blazed through an apartment complex on Monday evening. No injuries were reported.

The fire began at Waterford apartments off Talmadge Avenue around 3:30 p.m. and quickly spread to nearby units. According to officials, the fire first began on a balcony of one of the units. About 24 units were damaged in the blaze.

The fire is not considered suspicious at this time, according to officials and is being investigated by the Edison Fire Department and the Middlesex County Fire Marshal.

The displaced families have been relocated to a nearby hotel, Mayor Sam Joshi said.

The Red Cross of New Jersey has provided around 13 families with emergency assistance for food, clothing and other immediate needs.

Joshi thanked Red Cross and BAPS Charities for assisting families impacted by the fire.

"Thank you to all our first responders today. While today was devastating for so many families, we are thankful no one was injured and everyone evacuated immediately. We will continue to provide all those impacted by the fire with guidance and support to help them recover," Joshi said.

Families directly impacted by the fire who would like to meet with the Red Cross, can go to the Municipal Complex, Council chambers at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
