Ground Zero Flag To Make Stop In Edison For 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

EDISON, NJ — The Ground Zero Flag will make a stop in Edison on Sept. 11 as part of its journey from the Pentagon to New York City, 25 years after it was raised at Ground Zero by the New York/New Jersey Port Authority Police Department.

Edison's Fire House #2 was chosen as one of the stops along the route.

Mayor Sam Joshi and the Edison Township Council will join Edison's first responders and dignitaries for the Ground Zero Flag Team's Promise Run at 11 a.m., the township said.

"We invite the entire Edison community to join us as we remember and reflect on the event that changed our lives and our country forever," Joshi said in a statement.

The flag served in place of the FDNY flag during the 15 years it went missing before its recovery, and it has since traveled to military bases around the world, accompanying service members during critical military operations, the township said.

As part of Edison's 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, the township will hoist the flag for nine minutes and eleven seconds at Fire Station #2, located at 1997 NJ-27 in Edison, according to the township.

The ceremony will bring together representatives from Ground Zero, various fire departments, township officials, the Edison Police Department, the Edison Fire Department, dignitaries and residents to honor the memory of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and to reflect on an event the township said changed the nation forever.

Edison lost nine residents in the Sept. 11 attacks, all of whom died at the World Trade Center: Prem Nath Jerath, Sheldon R. Kanter, Vincent Anthony Laieta, Brian E. Martineau, Kaaria Mbaya, Manish K. Patel, Deepika Kumar Sattaluri, Scott M. Schertzer and Edward T. Strauss, according to a previous Patch report.

Neighboring Metuchen lost three residents in the attacks: Tariq Amanullah, Eustace "Rudy" Bacchus and Cynthia L. Connolly.
