JP Stevens Teacher Wins $100K Science Grant

The grant will be put towards the JPS greenhouse.

EDISON, NJ — A science teacher from J. P. Stevens High School was awarded a $100,000 grant to fund the school's greenhouse.

Laura Holborow was awarded the grant at an assembly last week. Holborow and her students will use the funding to install solar panels to make the greenhouse self-sustaining all year round.

"This is so overwhelming. I mean I was getting impatient trying to figure out if I won or not. Four years ago, I started begging for a greenhouse and here we are today," Holborow told NJ.com.

The Dream Big Challenge, sponsored by Farmer's Insurance, is a community voted grant awarded to five educators across the country. Another 180 teachers are awarded $2,500 grants.

The greenhouse produces 1,000 pounds of food a year, some of which is sold at a farm stand run by the Project P.I.E.C.E.S. program (Providing Instruction and Experience in Community and Everyday Studies). The special education program teaches students how to grow, package and sell their own produce. You can read more about the farm stand here.
