Man Punched Hospital Worker, Carjacked Woman Outside JFK: Police

Police say the man escaped from the hospital and forced a woman to drive him to the Bronx last week.

EDISON, NJ — A 29-year-old man faces multiple charges after he attacked a hospital worker and carjacked a woman outside of JFK Medical Center, forcing her to drive him to the Bronx, Edison Police said.

Akeem K. Benson faces carjacking, aggravated assault and terroristic threat charges in connection to the Friday morning incident. Police say Benson, a patient at the hospital, threw a lukewarm cup of tea at a hospital attendant, punched her, and pushed her down to the ground. After he attacked the attendant, he fled the hospital wearing only a green hospital down and white socks, police said.

In order to escape, police say Benson forced another woman leaving the hospital around 5:45 a.m. to drive him in her car to his mother's home in the Bronx.

The woman escaped after Benson got out of the car in the Bronx to urinate on the side of the road, police said.

New York City Police found Benson at his mother's home late Friday morning. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, and will be placed under arrest by Edison Police.

Edison residents were warned by police Friday morning that Benson was dangerous, and that they should not approach him.
