Man Rescued From Smoldering Mulch Pile In Edison: Officials

The man was working at a mulch facility when he fell down a hill and into the burning pile of mulch, officials said.

EDISON, NJ — Edison firefighters rescued a laborer trapped up to his neck in smoldering mulch at a composting facility fire in the early morning hours on Saturday, Edison officials said on Tuesday.

Yamil Mendez-Rodriguez, 28, from Dunellen, was working at the Generated Materials wood composting facility when he fell down an embankment and got stuck in the smoldering mulch during a fire around 2:20 a.m. early Saturday morning. Firefighters from Edison and Metuchen were already on scene at the Meadow Road facility, and worked quickly to dig him out from the mulch.

Officials said Mendez-Rodriguez was not burned, but was treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for knee pain.
