Pedestrian Killed By Tractor Trailer On Rt. 27 In Edison: Cops

A tractor-trailer hit a Metuchen man Friday morning on Rt. 27 near Vineyard Road, killing him. The driver has been found, say police.

EDISON, NJ — Police say they found the truck driver of a tractor-trailer that hit and killed a pedestrian Friday morning on Rt. 27 near Vineyard Road in Edison.

The fatal hit-and-run accident took place at 10:45 a.m. Friday on Rt. 27 south, near Vineyard Road, said police. Eyewitnesses said a tractor trailer struck a person near the Lukoil gas station at 2193 Rt. 27, and then left the scene. He may not have known he hit someone, Edison police said.

It was a 44-year-old man who was hit and killed; he was hit while riding a black electric bike. The deceased bicyclist was identified as Oscar Zanoni, 44, of Metuchen. He was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

“Our investigation is ongoing and our search for the tractor trailer is underway,” said Edison police Lt. Robert Dudash. "Given the size of tractor trailers, it is possible this driver may be unaware that a pedestrian was struck."

Since then the vehicle and the driver have been located; the driver is cooperating with authorities.

Rt. 27 southbound was closed Friday morning for the investigation.
