BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Bergen County residents and members of the law enforcement community are mourning an officer and father of three who died of a heart attack last week at age 46.
The Englewood Police Department said of Sgt. Matt DePetro on Wednesday, "[He] was a true leader who left an impact on every life he touched, personally and professionally. We were lucky to have called him one of our own. Rest in eternal peace. Please help us support his family as we grieve his sudden passing."
"His sudden passing in his sleep due to a medical event has left his family and colleagues heartbroken," says a fundraiser. "Matt was not only a great officer but also a trusted friend to many at the EPD. He took immense pride in his work, but his love for his family was even greater."
The state Crisis Intervention Team said, "He was a 2018 CIT-NJ graduate, a compassionate public servant, and someone who embodied the very principles that Crisis Intervention Team training strives to promote."
The fundraising campaign had raised more than $75,000 as of Friday. See the fundraiser here.
