Boil Water Order Lifted, But Fair Lawn Residents Should Do 5 Things First

FAIR LAWN, NJ — Fair Lawn residents can now drink and use their tap water again without boiling it first, the town announced Wednesday afternoon.

But residents should complete a few tasks before they start using the water, the town said.

A water main break near the Passaic River on Monday was fixed by Tuesday morning, but officials said residents should still boil their tap water until the state declared it contamination-free.

The break near the Passaic River prompted officials to issue a boil-water order around 3 p.m. on Monday.

"A water main break has occurred at 542 Wagaraw Road, which has caused some customers within our service area to be without water or experience a significant loss of pressure," the town said in a message.

Complete These Tasks

On Wednesday, around 2:30 p.m., the town said in a message:

"The boil water advisory is lifted and it is no longer necessary to boil your water before using."

However, the following measures are strongly encouraged, the town said:

Run your water faucets for 3-5 minutes to flush your service connection and interior plumbing with water from the service main. Also:

• Empty and clean your automatic ice makers and water chillers.
• Drain and refill your hot water heater if the temperature is set below 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Service connections with a water softener/cartridge filters should be run through a regeneration cycle or other procedures recommended by the manufacturer.
• Water reservoirs in tall buildings should be drained and refilled (as applicable).

They said, "We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience."
