Fair Lawn Thanks Its Veterans

Fair Lawn residents and officials gathered on Sunday, Nov. 11 to show gratitude to all those who wear and have worn the uniform in military service for the United States of America. The Fair Lawn Borough Council was fully represented and Mayor Baratta spoke of admiration for the veterans. The crowd of approximately 50 residents and veterans showed respect as the American flag was raised to full staff and taps was blown in remembrance of those who had given the last full measure of devotion.

Later in the day at Temple Beth Sholom the public was invited to participate in their Veterans Day event. This was the third Veterans Day presentation for the temple led by Rabbi Zeilicovich. The event included a moving speech from special guest Lt. Colonel Kilner, U.S. Army and West Point educator.

Kilner choked up several times when speaking of the casualties he witnessed while in Iraq and Afghanistan. Cantor Steven Barr led the crowd in singing the Star Spangled Banner and a rousing medley of songs of all the branches of service. There were many World War II veterans who were anxious to share their experiences with all those in attendance, which included Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove. This is a terrific event and is growing larger every year.  

The prior evening, Nov. 10, is reserved for Marines who all over the country commemorate the birth of their beloved corps. Born in 1775 at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Marines celebrate with grog and cake, and hoist a glass to those who "Gave All", Semper Fi! Ooh Rah!  

There are few things more important than remembering and recognizing the bravery and sacrifice of all the men and women who serve and have served our country in the armed forces. It is especially important to recognize these individuals during a time in our history when we are at war. All of our active duty members volunteer for duty. Appreciate our veterans and active duty service members for what they do -- defend and protect the United States of America. Thank them for their service every chance you can and remember there is a family waiting for them to come home safely.     

Have some fun and support the troops

a non-profit that sends packages overseas to active duty personnel will be staging "Rock Jam 2012" on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 3:30 pm to 12:30 am at the New Milford/Teaneck Elks Lodge at 1 Patrolman Ray Woods Lane in New Milford. The event will feature 12 local bands playing classic rock-and-roll music in support of the troops. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door.
