"This caused the department to get creative in trying to fight the fire," said officials.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — Fair Lawn's Fire Department had to "get creative" when confronting a very flammable situation over the weekend, they said.
On Saturday, just before 10 a.m., the firefighters were asked to respond to the parking lot of a former Boston Market on Broadway.

Assistant Fire Chief Marc Palmieri found a garbage truck full of cardboard, meant to be recycled, ablaze.

"The garbage truck’s hydraulic system failed and it was unable to dump the load," officials said. "This caused the department to get creative in trying to fight the fire located in the compactor of the truck."

The Fair Lawn Rescue Squad used the jaws of life to pry open the truck, and a bucket loader kept it propped open.

Ladder 2 used a stream device to remove the cardboard.
It took three hours to fight the fire because of where it was inside the truck, officials said. The operation finished by 1:30 p.m., they said.
