Fair Lawn Man Dragged By Car During Botched Xbox Sale: Police

A man was given an envelope full of tissue paper instead of money, before being dragged by a car while suspects fled the scene, police say.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — A Fair Lawn man is out over $500, and he's got a leg injury to show for it.

Just after 8 p.m. in the parking lot of CVS on Fair Lawn Avenue a Fair Lawn resident was given an envelope full of tissue paper instead of money, before being dragged by a car while two suspects fled the scene with his Xbox gaming system, police said.

According to police, the resident, who was not identified, met with two potential buyers of the gaming console he met on Facebook Marketplace. After exchanging the console — valued at $538, according to police — with one of them, he followed the man to his car, where he was handed an envelope full of what should have been money.

Instead, that envelope was full of tissue paper.

After making the exchange, the suspects backed out of their parking spot with the passenger door still open, dragging the Fair Lawn man "a few feet" and causing a minor leg injury, police said.

The man refused medical attention at the scene, according to police.

Neither suspect has been apprehended, and Fair Lawn Police ask that anyone with information on the matter contact Detective Mark Wyka at 201-794-5410.

The department also took the chance to remind Fair Lawn residents that a "Safe Exchange Zone" is available for these sorts of transactions in the lobby of Borough Hall, 8-01 Fair Lawn Ave.
