Fair Lawn Tops Bergenfield to Advance in Counties

The Fair Lawn High School softball team came away with a 4-1 victory Saturday over the Bergenfield Bears in the first round of the county playoffs.

Senior ace Marissa Spinuzzi was a force in the circle and at the plate Saturday, leading No. 6 Fair Lawn to a 4-1 win over No. 27 Bergenfield in the first round of the Bergen County Softball Tournament.

After setting down the Bears in the top of the first, Spinuzzi got things started immediately in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homerun. She finished 1-for-3 at the dish and went the distance on the hill, striking out 10, walking three and surrendering one unearned run in the fourth inning.

The game remained tied at one heading into the bottom half of the fifth when the Cutters' bats came to life with doubles by sophomore designated player Sam Dypko and junior second baseman Sam Colca that spurred a three-run rally and put the Cutters ahead for good.
