Gas Main Break Closes Bergen County Highway, Detours Mall Traffic

A gas main break has closed a stretch of highway in southern Bergen County until at least Saturday night, police said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A gas main break in southern Bergen County has closed a stretch of highway just north of the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford.

Traffic near MetLife Stadium and the American Dream complex is being rerouted, police in East Rutherford said on Friday night.

The northbound lanes of that stretch of Route 120 will remain closed until at least Saturday night, East Rutherford police said.

All lanes of Route 120/Paterson Plank Road northbound — near the intersection with Gotham Parkway — were closed starting around 10 p.m. Friday, said the state Department of Transportation.

The lanes were still closed as of 8:33 a.m. Saturday morning, said NJ511.org.

The highway is a popular conduit between Routes 3 and 17 in southern Bergen County.

The East Rutherford police posted on social media on Friday night, "Please be advised that Paterson Plank Road Northbound in Carlstadt will be closed until Saturday night potentially into Sunday morning while PSEG works on a gas line ... Access to Paterson Plank Road from Route 120 North, between Metlife and American Dream, will be detoured onto Washington Avenue in Carlstadt. Access to Paterson Plank Road from Washington Avenue will be detoured onto Route 120 South."

Then noted that they don't expect southbound traffic on Paterson Plank Road to be affected.

"Please avoid the area and use alternative routes," they said.

They said that NJ Transit buses would be rerouted as well.
