Kuiken Brothers Celebrates 100 Years in Fair Lawn

One of New Jersey's leading lumber suppliers was founded in Fair Lawn in 1912

, a leading supplier of lumber, millwork and building materials, celebrates its centennial anniversary in Fair Lawn this year.

The Kuiken family emigrated from Netherlands to New Jersey in the late 1800s, where brothers Henry and Nicholas settled in what is now Fair Lawn. Older brother Dirk and cousin Richard, Sr. soon joined them and in 1912, using their sharply honed carpentering skills, they laid the foundation of what would eventually become a household name for lumber in New Jersey.

Today, Kuiken Brothers is a fourth-generation family company with 240 employees and nine locations across New Jersey and New York.

"My family began its migration to America about a hundred years after New Jersey received statehood," company president Douglas R. Kuiken said in a statement. "Kuiken Brothers played a key role in the second half of our state's history through building, commerce, philanthropy, good corporate citizenship and environmental-consciousness. I am very proud of our family and employee team. For the past century, they have put heart and soul into making a positive and indelible impact on our state."

A book on the full history of Kuiken Brothers Company, by Jon Kuiken, will be available this spring, and as part of its yearlong 100th anniversary celebration, the company will host its annual Product Expo in November.
