Fair Lawn's Most Dangerous Roads for Pedestrians [Interactive Map]
In the past 27 months, no road in Fair Lawn has been the scene of more pedestrian strikes than Fair Lawn Avenue.

Since 2010, there have been 58 pedestrians struck and injured by motor vehicles in Fair Lawn, according to traffic data. That's slightly more than two individuals hit per month on average during that stretch.
No thoroughfare in town has been the scene of more motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians than Fair Lawn Avenue. More than one quarter of all pedestrian strikes since 2010 have occurred on Fair Lawn Avenue. Four of the six borough intersections/locations where pedestrians have been hit by vehicles on multiple occasions since 2010 happened along Fair Lawn Avenue.
In the past two-plus years, no single intersection has proven to be more hazardous to pedestrians than Fair Lawn Avenue at George Street, where three pedestrians were struck by motor vehicles in a single year (2010) alone. Fortunately, there have been no pedestrians hit at Fair Lawn Avenue and George Street since those three in 2010.

So far this year, the intersection of Broadway and Midland Avenue has already twice been the scene of pedestrian strikes. Among borough roads, Broadway is second only to Fair Lawn Avenue since 2010 in the number of pedestrians hit and injured there by motor vehicles.
The potential danger posed to pedestrians trying to cross at either busy strip has not escaped the attention of borough council. Both Republican and Democratic spoke out publicly about their intentions to increase pedestrian safety during their council campaigns last year.

In recent months, Fair Lawn has been awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in pedestrian safety grants from the state to make improvements on and by adding bump outs, an enhanced crosswalk and pedestrian crossing timers.
Bump-outs, also known as curb extensions, are used as traffic calming devices on busy roadways. Their purpose is to provide an additional element to shield vehicles parked on the street and enable pedestrians to make shorter, safer crossings at intersections.
