Saddle Brook Family 'Extremely Lucky' Following Fire Saturday

The fire appears to have started in a detached shed and spread to the house, police said.

SADDLE BROOK, NJ — A borough home was severely damaged and the family living there is displaced after a fire Saturday morning, police said.

The Saddle Brook Police Department, Fire Department other nearby municipal fire departments responded to the blaze on Hayes Drive at 9 a.m., said Police Chief Robert Kugler.

The family evacuated the home before police arrived, Kugler said, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

Police reported that the back part of the house and detached shed were "full engulfed in flames," the chief said.

The fire appears to have started in a detached shed and spread to the northeast corner of the house, Kugler said. The home suffered major damaged and is uninhabitable.

Trim and siding on one side of an adjacent home was also damaged.

"The family homeowners were extremely lucky the fire began when it did, should it of happened during the late night or early morning hours, the potential for tragedy or other serious consequences could of been a reality," Kugler said.
